Hi, I’m Coach Colin! I swam almost a decade for the Hurricanes and I’m so excited to be back! I’ve been coaching for about four years now, most recently of which was a head coach position in Newport News. Fun fact, my favorite memory as a Woodlake Hurricane was always Fun Fridays and I’m so excited to be able to experience that with all of our swimmers. We’re going to make a ton of progress with all of our swimmers for the 2025 season and I am so excited to see each and every person grow throughout the summer. GO CANES!!!
Hi! My name is Coach David, and I have been swimming for Woodlake for nearly ten years. Next year, I will be a Junior at Maggie Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies. I have been a junior assistant coach for two years, but this is my first year as an assistant coach. My favorite events are the 100 Fr and the 50 Br, and I can’t wait to have another incredible season this year!
Hi! My name is Elizabeth Vallent, and I am super excited to coach again this summer. I will be a coach of Tropical Storm and the younger swimmers this year. I am a rising junior at Powhatan High School, where I swim for the school team. I have swam for the past 5 years with Poseidon. Being a coach is a big deal to me because I was on Tropical Storm myself. I’m extremely excited to see and coach the future of the Hurricanes.
All children of residents of Woodlake and Woodlake pool members are invited to join the Hurricanes. Children between the ages of 4-18 should be able to swim 25 yards to qualify for the team. Each team member will receive a swim cap and will have the option to purchase a Woodlake team suit but it is not necessary. Goggle are also highly suggested but not required.
There are a total of six meets not including CHAMPS which is a qualification meet. We will have three “home” meets and three “away” meets. Arrival for away meets is 5:00 pm with a starting time of 6:00 pm and arrival for home meets is 4:30 pm. New/younger swimmers will typically swim Freestyle and Backstroke until they get comfortable with all the strokes. Meets are not required, but they are fun and competing with team friends is a great way to celebrate your hard work in the pool.
As the parent of a member of the swim team, you will be required to fulfill three volunteer spots for one swimmer, or five per season if you have multiple swimmers. Jobs vary from timing, helping get kids to their lane at the right time, setting up and cleaning up, and strokes/turns judge. More information can be found under “Volunteer Descriptions” tab.
Please see the current year “Registration Information” tab on this page.
Tropical Storm season ends at the end of the Hurricanes season, so children are not moved up. They can develop their skills in Tropical Storm and join Hurricanes next year.
Tropical Storm is a fun, safe learning environment for your young swimmer, ages 4-9, and a preparatory program for our Summer Swim Team. Refer to the Meet and Practices times link for current info.
Tropical Storm swimmers will have the opportunity to swim in a mini meet. Date will be announced prior to the start of the season. This is a great learn-to-swim program! Your swimmer will feel safe and comfortable in learning water safety and stroke technique.
Tropical Storm is headed up by our awesome coaching staff!
