Woodlake Community Association

Candidate: Gregg Daly

email: greggdaly23@gmail.com
How long have you lived in Woodlake? 1 year
Where did you move from? Connecticut

Describe any previous experience serving on a board, particularly if for a property owners association.
I have a little bit of prior board experience. I briefly served as treasurer for my condo HOA back in CT. I also hold various board positions internally at my company for a few of our legal entities.

What other activities or groups are you involved in at Woodlake or outside of Woodlake?
I’m a very active person and enjoy things like golf, volleyball, hiking, fly fishing and traveling. My fiance and I are still pretty new to VA but we’ve enjoyed it so far! We are also both involved with a local dog rescue and volunteer to help with fundraising and exercising/socializing the dogs there.

6 Questions Asked of Each Board Candidate:

1. How do you describe Woodlake to other people?
I’ve lived in Woodlake for a little over one year now. My fiance and I were looking for a house after moving down from CT and we quickly narrowed in on the Woodlake neighborhood. We loved the neighborhood, amenities, walking/running trails and the access to the lake – which is not something easily found in the area. Whenever I’m asked about Woodlake I highlight all these great things as well as the many events the community hosts to engage in.

2. What do you consider to be the primary functions and responsibilities of the Board of Directors?
The Board of Directors is responsible for governing and managing the community on behalf of its members. I view it’s primary role as fiduciary—acting in the best interests of the community while enforcing governing documents. This includes safeguarding the communities assets to maintain financial stability, overseeing maintenance/repair of community shared assets and continually assessing opportunities to grow and make the community a more desired location to live. All of these decisions should be made on behalf of the entire community and done transparently.

3. What personal characteristics/skills do you possess that you believe will enhance the performance of the Board?
I believe I would be a good addition to the performance of the board because I have some prior board experience. I served on my HOA board as treasurer prior to moving out of the community. I am also a CFO of a business unit at my company and am responsible for budgeting, managing profitability and making decisions on how to best use our funding – all of which I think are applicable to the role of a board member.

4. What is your experience, attendance, and/or participation in board and/or committee meetings at Woodlake?
I have lived in Woodlake for just over a year now – I’ve listened in on a few board meetings over that time to get a sense of what the main discussion items are. I also actively read all the materials and recaps posted on the website. I’ve also had experience serving on a prior HOA board so am familiar with the process and typical issues faced by homeowner associations.

5. What do you feel are the main issues and/or concerns confronting Woodlake over the next 3 to 5 years.
I think the main issues that are important to focus on over the next few years for Woodlake are:

1. Thackers development – Continuing to engage the developers on how to effectively integrate the development into the Woodlake community.

2. Maintaining / Improving Assets – Continue to maintain community assets such as the pools, fitness facilities, trails, playgrounds, etc. These are part of what make the community a great place to live and it’s important to make sure they stay in good condition. I think it’s also important toasses any changes that should be made or opportunities for additions to these. There is a lot of new development in the area so it’s important to make sure our community continues to be a sought after place to live.

3. Financial Stability – Continue to make sure that the association’s financials remain in a stable place to support maintaining the community to the standard that makes it a desired location to live.

6. Residents have expressed concern over the upkeep and conditions of Woodlake Community common and/or open space as designed under the master plan. As a candidate, do you have a vision, or can you share your thoughts on this topic? I think it should be a priority to make sure that community amenities and common spaces are kept in top condition. We have great assets in the community that can help differentiate our community from all the new developments in the area. I think having the lake as part of our community is especially unique and desirable since that’s hard to fi nd in the area! If elected to the board I would help make sure we have a good plan in place for upkeep on community trails, playgrounds, pools, lake access.
